Peter Gadet declares ceasefire as South Sudan rebels say he has defected – Sudan Tribune

  • Rebel leader Peter Gadet declared a ceasefire with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, but members of his rebel group refuse the arrangement, saying their leader has defected. Gadet arrived in Juba yesterday to finalize the terms of the ceasefire.

Rapists, not reporters, must face criminal charges in Sudan, says UN envoy- UN News

  • The UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict expressed concern over the journalists jailed for reporting on an alleged rape, emphasizing that “rapists – not reporters – must face criminal charges in the Sudan”.

Sudan slams Security Council, threatens to cancel UNAMID mandate – Sudan Tribune

  • Sudan criticized the UN Security Council for attempting to change the UNAMID mandate to reference to the International Criminal Court and threatened to expel the peacekeepers if any changes are made.

Four UN blue helmets die after landmine detonates in Abyei area of Sudan- UN News

  • Four Ethiopian UN peacekeepers died and seven were injured in Abyei after a landmine detonated during a patrol.

Sudan President to hold meeting with SPLM’s Aggar- Sudan Tribune

  • President Omar al-Bashir plans to meet with Malik Aggar, chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, within the next 48 hours to discuss containing the military escalation in South Kordofan.

Kuwaiti firm eyes Sudan oil exploration- Sudan Tribune

  • The Gulf Petroleum Investment Company, a Kuwaiti firm, has expressed interest in conduction oil exploration and drilling activities in Sudan. They met with Sudan’s minister for oil this week.

Nuba Mountains: SPLM blocks Kadugli airport; thousands displaced by continuous bombing- Radio Dabanga

  • The Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement in South Kordofan announced that they are currently surrounding Kadugli, and they have bombed the airport and destroyed all roads leading to it in order to limit aerial bombing by government forces.

NCP’s Nafi says his party recognizes SPLM in South Kordofan, Blue Nile- Sudan Tribune

  • Nafi al Nafi says the government of Sudan recognizes the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. The now defunct agreement signed in June included provisions to recognize the SPLM- North as a legitimate political party, which President al-Bashir rejected.

Sudan admits to moving corpses via trucks in S. Kordofan- Sudan Tribune

  • The Government of Sudan admitted that it instructed that corpses be collected and moved in trucks for burial by the Red Crescent in South Kordofan. The government denied allegations of mass graves as a misrepresentation of facts.

Closure of Doha process means return to war in Darfur – JEM- Sudan Tribune

  • The Justice and Equality Movement said that the closure of the Doha peace negotiations means a return to war in Darfur. The Government of Sudan has invited JEM to sign the current peace deal, but will not allow further negotiations, and JEM refuses to sign without continued discussion.

South Kordofan governor says Al-Hilu planned coup with Darfur rebels- Sudan Tribune

  • Ahmed Haroun, governor of South Kordofan, has accused Abdel Aziz al-Hilu of plotting a coup with Darfuri rebels to assassinate 110 political leaders. Haroun beat al-Hilu in contentions gubernatorial elections earlier this year, which al-Hilu protested as rigged.

Kiir dissolves national intelligence, special branch and public security organs- Sudan Tribune

  • President Salva Kiir has dissolved the national security and intelligence organization in South Sudan that had existed parallel to their north Sudanese counterparts. Kiir appointed two directors for external and internal security and is expected to form a new ministry for national security.

South Sudan militia deputy admits killing of his leader Gutluak- Sudan Tribune

  • The deputy commander of the South Sudan Liberation Army has admitted to killing leader Gatluak Gai. He asserted that Gai had commanded troops to ignore the ceasefire signed with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and instead cooperate with forces from the north to attack the south.

Another Sudanese journalist jailed on rape case charges- Sudan Tribune

  • Amal Habani, a female Sudanese journalist, was jailed today for writing against the alleged rape of Safia Ishaaq, a Sudanese activist, by security agents. The court sentenced Habani on charges of publishing false information and violating journalistic ethics. She chose a month in jail rather than pay the fine of 2,000 pounds (roughly 700 USD).

South Sudan rebel leader Gatluak Gai killed in mysterious circumstances- Sudan Tribune

  • Three days after signing a peace deal with the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Southern rebel leader Gatluak Gai was killed. The SPLM denies any involvement in his death and accused Gai’s deputy of killing him because of an internal disagreement.

Sudan FM denies willingness to accept peacekeepers in S. Kordofan- Sudan Tribune

  • Ali Karti, the Sudanese foreign minister, denied any possibility of being open to allowing UN peacekeepers in South Kordofan. Karti was previously cited as saying that if local leaders agreed to an international force it would be possible.

Sudan army claims capturing JEM military commander in South Kordofan- Sudan Tribune

  • The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) claim they have captured the military commander of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM)  in South Kordofan. The SAF had previously denied reports of JEM fighting in South Kordofan.

Arrests of SPLM leaders in Nyala- Radio Dabanga

  • Three Sudan People’s Liberation Movement leaders in Darfur were arrested when security forces raided their office and confiscated two vehicles.

Over 1,900 returnees stranded in Rumbek, three die- Sudan Tribune

  • Thousands of South Sudanese are returning from the north, and in Rumbek over 1,900 returnees have been stranded since their arrival on July 8th,  three have died. The Southern Sudan Relief Rehabilitation Commission is facing difficulties providing them transportation to their local homes.

Renegade Gatluak Gai agrees to integrate into SPLA says Unity State official- Sudan Tribune

  • Southern rebel Gatluak Gai agreed to a peace deal that integrates his forces into the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, now the official military of South Sudan. Several rebel militias are operating in South Sudan, a potential threat to the stability of the new state.
