Sudan’s Nuba refugees stuck on border, lack aid—AFP

“Bilal Issa Johar is one of around 25,000 people who fled Sudan’s South Kordofan state and sought refuge across the border, in the newly independent south, after fighting erupted in June and his village near Kadugli was bombed. But then, last Thursday, an Antonov aircraft flew in from the north and dropped five bombs in and around Yida, according to the United Nations, terrifying the residents and causing international outrage…” (More)

ICC prosecutor to request arrest warrant for Sudan defence minister: report—Sudan Tribune

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court are seeking an arrest warrant against the Sudanese Minister of Defense Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein for crimes he committed while the representative for Darfur in 2003 and 2004.  The indictment is expected to occur the week of November 17th or 21st.

Border battles threaten the new Sudans—BBC News

South Sudan accused Sudan of supporting southern rebels in their attacks on oil-rich areas. Sudan has denied the accusations saying that it was not the responsible for the aerial bombings of the two refugee camps in Southern Sudan and that those fleeing Blue Nile and South Kordofan to South Sudan are not civilians but rebels.  Both countries have built up security forces along the international border.

Ban voices deep concern over worsening rhetoric between Sudan and South Sudan—UN News Centre

Secretary General of the United Nations expressed deep concern over the increasingly extreme rhetoric between Sudan and South Sudan, fearing it could lead to deterioration in relations between the two countries and possibly war.  Ban also condemned the formation of the Sudan Revolutionary Front made up of four armed groups, and implored all parties to avoid violent means. Darfur LJM counts on Washington workshop to convince holdout rebels to join peace—Sudan Tribune

The Liberation and Justice Movement(LJM) is hoping that the workshop in Washington aimed at making peace in Darfur will be successful in convincing other rebel groups to sign the Doha Darfur Peace Document (DDPD).  The LJM was the only rebel group to join the Sudanese government in agreeing to the Doha peace accord, and most of the other groups refused unless they were allowed to renegotiate the conditions.

Sudan denies its citizens taking refuge in south, US says bombing denial ‘blatant lie’ –Sudan Tribune

Sudan has denied that Sudanese civilians are fleeing the country for refuge from government attacks or that it bombed two of the refugee camps in South Sudan they are fleeing to.  US Ambassador Sudan Rice said the denials were a “blatant lie” and that the evidence is “incontrovertible”.  The aerial attack on the Yida refugee camp was witnessed by UN personnel delivering aid in the area and the damage was videotaped.

Rebel groups agree to work together for regime change in Sudan—Sudan Tribune

Four of the major rebel groups operating in Sudan agreed on Friday to form a coalition called the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), to overthrow Omer El-Bashir’s regime and replace it with a democratic government based on “voluntary unity and neutrality of religion on political matters”.  The coalition is made up of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM), the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM-AW) led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).

Sudan attacks southern army base kill 18—AFP

Sudanese mercenary ground troops reportedly crossed the border and attacked a military base in Upper Nile state, South Sudan today.  Eighteen combatants were killed in ensuing battle and another 73 were killed.  This attack followed two bombing raids by SAF on refugee camps in South Sudan.  South Sudanese President Salva Kiir warned that Sudanese government is trying to bring the two nations back to war.

South Sudan Says Khartoum-Backed Rebels Are Planning to Strike Oil Fields—Bloomberg

Following the attack by Sudanese mercenaries on a South Sudanese military base that killed 18 people, South Sudan’s government expressed concern that Sudan may launch an attack to retake South Sudan’s oil fields in Upper Nile state.

Headlines from Sudan: Nov. 10

S.Sudan accuses Khartoum of air strike on camp—AFP

Just a day after Sudan crossed country borders to bomb the Gaffa area of South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, it has bombed South Sudan again.  Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Antonov bombers crossed the border today and bombed the town of Yida in Unity state, where 20,000 civilians from Sudan’s embattled South Kordofan state have fled to for safety.  At least twelve were killed and 20 wounded by the four or five bombs that were dropped. President of South Sudan Salva Kiir had condemned the earlier attack on South Sudan’s sovereign territory and accused Sudan of trying to spark a war between the two nations.

S. Sudan’s Kiir blames Khartoum for violence—AFP

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir accused Sudan of conducting a four-hour aerial bombardment of a refugee camp in the Gaffa area of South Sudan’s Upper Nile state on Wednesday. At least seven people were killed.  Upper Nile state has served as a place of refuge for refugees fleeing the bombings in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile. Kiir accused Sudanese president Omer El-Bashir of using the conflicts in the border states to distract Sudanese citizens from political problems and to keep soldiers from rebelling.

Sudan rebuffs US proposal on South Kordofan—Sudan Tribune

The Sudanese government has spurned a US proposal to end the conflict in South Kordofan between the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) and government forces.  According to a Sudanese newspaper, Al-Sahafah, the US proposal would split South Kordofan, with one half becoming the state of West Kordofan. The elected SPLM-N governor, Abdel Aziz Ali-Hilu, would be reinstated in South Kordofan and the current National Congress Party governor Ahmed Haroun would govern West Kordofan.  The government flatly rejected the proposal saying it is unwilling to consider any proposal that may lead to further secession of territory to South Sudan.

Washington workshop should focus on Doha document for peace in Darfur – LJM—Sudan Tribune

The Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) has agreed to attend a Washington workshop next week that aims to bring peace to Darfur.  They said the focus of the workshop must be on how to bring non-signatory rebel to sign the Doha Darfur Peace Document (DDPD) peace agreement.

Security Council stresses need to end impunity after latest attack on peacekeepers—UN News Centre

The UN Security Council called for an end to the impunity that has allowed blatant ambushes of UN-AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) peacekeepers convoys.  The statement came in reaction to the death of a peacekeeper from Sierra Leone who was killed in an ambush on Sunday. The UN Security Council demanded that those responsible for the attacks be brought to justice.

Sudan’s DUP leader leaves door open for joining NCP-led government—Sudan Tribune

Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has announced that DUP is still considering the possibility of joining the National Congress Party-led government, and has formed a committee that will take into consideration the desires of the party membership.  In remarks later, however, al-Mirghani accused those who wanted DUP to join the government of dividing the party.

Bashir declares “liberation” of Kurmuk, threatens South Sudan—Sudan Tribune

Sudanese President Omer El-Bashir announced that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have retaken Al-Kurmuk town in Blue Nile from the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). He also said that SAF has found evidence that proves South Sudan is supporting the SPLM-N rebels and threatened to return to war with South Sudan if these provocations continue.

Sudan files complaint against South—Radio Dabanga

The government of Sudan filed a complaint against South Sudan in the UN Security Council accusing the new nation of supporting the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) rebels who have rebelled in Blue Nile and South Kordofan. (more…)

South Sudan shows progress in State-building, but faces security challenges – UN—Miraya FM

Hilde Johnson, Special Representative and Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), said that South Sudan has made progress on building state institutions and reintegrating militias into the army, but is still unable to protect its civilians from rebel attacks and inter-communal ethnic violence. South Sudan has created its legislature and integrated three different rebel groups into the national army. Unfortunately deadly cattle raids between ethnic communities and the rebel South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) show the work South Sudan must do to provide security to its citizens.

Sudan’s Bashir vows imminent liberation of border town—Sudan Tribune

Sudanese President Omer El-Bashir declared that the Sudanese Armed Forces and Popular Defense Forces are planning an immediate attack on the rebel-held town of Al-Kurmuk in Blue Nile.  The Sudanese Armed Forces have been running bombing raids over civilian areas in the Blue Nile, killing civilians, and displacing tens of thousands.
