Pro-Qaddafi Forces Attack Major Libyan City

March 19th, 2011 by Allyson Neville-Morgan

A little more than one day after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution authorizing “all necessary measures” to protect civilians in Libya, pro-Qaddafi forces have launched an offensive against the city of Benghazi.

Yesterday, even as the Libyan government claimed that a ceasefire was in effect, statements from the United States Government accused Qaddafi of violating the UNSC resolution by moving troops toward cities in the east of the country. With confirmation that attacks are now taking place against Benghazi, the international community is poised to take immediate action.

Following a meeting in Paris this morning, French President Nicolas Sarkozy stated that action is now underway against Qaddafi. It is anticipated that France and the United Kingdom will lead the effort with support from the United States, Canada and the Arab League. At the time of this blog post, French planes were reportedly in the air over Libya. We will continue to keep you updated of the latest developments in this fast moving situation.
