Former “Survivors” Showing Solidarity with Darfur

July 7th, 2009 by Maya Colbert

As efforts to end the conflict in Darfur continue, many celebrities, political figures and everyday people alike are showing their support by participating in the current much publicized Fast For Darfur. Mia Farrow began a fast for Darfur in April 2009 and although she had to stop after twelve days other celebrities and high profile political figures have continued the fast.

Now joining the ranks are five former stars of the popular reality show “Survivor.” Survivor is an endurance reality show in which participants live in difficult conditions to try and win a prize.  The five are Toby Archa, Kimberly Mullen and Janu Tornell of “Survivor: Palau,” Michael Skupin of “Survivor: Australian Outback” and Scout Cloud Lee of “Survivor: Vanuatu.”

They had this to say about their efforts:

“While we are known to the world as ‘Survivors,’ that concept pales in comparison to the survivors in Darfur.”

The fasters also have a blog that they use to write about their experiences.  Their efforts have been covered by the Detroit Free Press, Philadelphia Online, The Insider and Courant News, among other sources.

I joined the fast too. It helped me feel a deeper connection to the people of Darfur. During the fast, I was working with other activists about charting a new course for the Darfur movement. You can join an online discussion on this subject at: http://bechamilton.com/
