Nowhere to Turn

June 1st, 2009 by Sarah Grundahl

Today’s report on violence against women and the Darfur conflict is a must read. Its title summarizes Physicians for Human Rights’ findings. For Darfuri refugees there is Nowhere to Turn.

“Nowhere to Turn: Failure to Protect, Support and Assure Justice for Darfuri Women”.

This paper is an opportunity for us to hear about the heavy burden that women carry, the depression and the anxiety that they face daily, and, the saddest part for me personally, the profound sense that no one seems to care.

The report goes on, “The nightmare therefore continues in refugee camps in Chad through the constant threat of rape (when women forage for firewood to cook their food), chronic hunger, and a lack of essential needs to support their families”.

Meanwhile, refugee women continue to respond to violence, oppression and stigma in the camp. The report highlights “a one-page document in Arabic, (written) in hopes of shedding light on the plight of women refugees and opening a dialogue with the world.” Check out the rest of the Marchana Manifesto at www.darfuriwomen.org.

The report lays out the way forward, with recommendations for the international community, the government of Chad, the International Criminal Court, and others. When you are finished reading the report and recommendations, click here to take action to stop violence against women in the Darfur genocide.
