After repeated delays, an official from the National Elections Commission (NEC) yesterday said that the results of the presidential election will be announced on Sunday. The largest of the opposition parties have already declared that they will not accept Omar Al-Bashir’s expected victory as legitimate. Such statements have also come from key leaders of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM), which was a partner in a unity government with Bashir’s National Congress Party (NCP) before the elections. In response, leading figures within the NCP have warned the opposition of creating disturbances after the elections, vowing that Khartoum will not become the next Tehran or Nairobi.
In this tense environment, news over the last week has also slowly been released about other races for parliamentary, gubernatorial, and local seats – and more announcements are expected in the coming days. Earlier in the week, tensions ran high over the results of the governor’s race in Blue Nile State; however, it now appears that Bashir’s National Congress Party (NCP) is ready to accept defeat to the popular SPLM candidate. The hotly contested race for governor of Unity State in the South also remains a potential flashpoint for violence.
This past week, Sudanese civil society leaders accused the Sudanese government of blocking the independent monitoring site, Sudan Vote Monitor. Likewise, it was reported that YouTube was being blocked in Sudan after the posting of a video that allegedly showed vote rigging in Red Sea State.
