Last Wednesday, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to adopt Resolution 1888, the full text of which can be found here. This resolution, introduced by Secretary of State Clinton, calls for the UN Secretary General to appoint a high-level special representative on sexual violence in armed conflict, to quickly deploy teams of experts to conflict situations where sexual violence is of concern, and to use the prevalence of sexual violence as a metric when determining whether sanctions should be applied or renewed in armed conflict situations. The resolution also calls for further engendering global peacekeeping forces and for the inclusion of “issues of sexual violence” in all UN-sponsored peace negotiation agendas and peace processes. While recognizing the broad and ambitious goals laid out in this resolution will require sustained commitment from UN member states, we are encouraged by the UNSC’s attention to sexual violence in conflict zones and hopeful about what these commitments may mean for those who have experienced, and will experience, sexual violence in Sudan. Watch Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon speak about the resolution.
