A ‘Peace Surge’ for Sudan

November 6th, 2008 by Andrew Burnette

The election of Barack Obama opens a window of opportunity for the United States to use its considerable experience in peacemaking.  So, today the ENOUGH Project, the Genocide Intervention Network, and the Save Darfur Coalition released a joint statement urging President-elect Obama to make Darfur a top priority.  In short, it calls on Barack Obama to “lead a concerted international peace surge for Sudan.”

Some suggestions for the President-elect include:

  • Don’t try to contain the damage from the war in Darfur—END the war.
  • Don’t just declare that genocide is taking place—END the genocide.
  • Don’t just manage the consequences of crisis after crisis in Sudan—END these crises.
